Topics in The Amazing World of Solutes, Solvents, and Solutions

1

1. Solute, Solvent, and Solution

  • A solution is a uniform mixture formed when a solute dissolves in a solvent.
  • In a solid-liquid solution, the solid is the solute and the liquid is the solvent.
  • In liquid-liquid solutions, the smaller amount is called the solute and the larger amount is called the solvent.
2

2. Saturated, Unsaturated, Dilute, and Concentrated Solutions

  • An unsaturated solution can still dissolve more solute at a given temperature.
  • A saturated solution cannot dissolve any more solute at that temperature, and excess solute settles at the bottom.
  • Concentration means the amount of solute present in a fixed quantity of solution or solvent.
3

3. Effect of Temperature on Solubility

  • For most substances, solubility of solids increases when temperature increases.
  • Solubility of gases generally decreases when temperature increases.
  • Cold water holds more dissolved oxygen than warm water.
4

4. Density and Relative Density

  • Density is mass present in a unit volume of a substance.
  • Density is independent of shape and size but depends on temperature and pressure.
  • Pressure mainly affects gases; its effect on liquids is small and on solids is negligible.
