1. Matter and its constituent particles

  • Matter is composed of extremely small particles.
  • A constituent particle is the basic unit that makes up a larger piece of a substance or material.

2. Interparticle attractions and states of matter

  • The constituent particles of matter are held together through attractive forces called interparticle attractions.
  • The strength of these attractions depends on the nature of the substance and the interparticle distance.
  • Even a slight increase in distance decreases the interparticle forces drastically.

3. Solid state

  • Solids have a definite shape and definite volume.
  • In solids, particles are tightly packed.
  • Strong interparticle attractions hold particles in fixed positions.

4. Liquid state

  • Liquids do not have a fixed shape and take the shape of the container they are kept in.
  • Liquids have a definite volume.
  • Particles in liquids are somewhat farther apart than in solids, but they are still close together.
