What is Matter Composed of?
- All matter is composed of extremely small particles called constituent particles
- These particles are so small that they cannot be seen even with an ordinary microscope
- When we break chalk into smaller pieces, each piece is still chalk made of millions of constituent particles
Interparticle Forces and States of Matter
- Particles are held together by forces called interparticle attractions
- Strength of these forces depends on distance between particles - closer particles have stronger attractions
- These forces determine the physical state of matter

- Solids have definite shape and definite volume
- Particles in solids are tightly packed with strong interparticle attractions
- Particles can only vibrate about fixed positions, cannot move freely
Liquid State Properties
- Liquids have no fixed shape but have definite volume
