1. Basic idea of tissues and organisation

  • A tissue is a group of similar cells working together for a specific function.
  • In multicellular organisms, division of labour increases efficiency.
  • Cells form tissues, tissues form organs, organs form organ systems, and organ systems form the organism.

2. Meristematic tissue and plant growth

  • Meristematic tissue has actively dividing cells.
  • It is responsible for plant growth in length, girth, and regrowth after cutting.
  • Apical meristem is at root and shoot tips and increases length.

3. Permanent tissues in plants

  • Permanent tissues are formed from meristematic tissue after differentiation.
  • Permanent tissues may be simple or complex.
  • Simple permanent tissues contain one type of cell.

4. Conducting tissues and tissue systems in plants

  • Xylem and phloem are complex permanent tissues.
  • Xylem transports water and minerals from roots to other parts of the plant and also provides strength.
  • Xylem consists of tracheids, vessels, xylem parenchyma, and xylem fibres.
