3. Solubility and Saturated Solutions

  • Solubility is the maximum amount of solute that dissolves in a fixed amount of solvent at a given temperature.

  • Solubility of a solid in a liquid generally increases with temperature.

4. Crystallization

  • A crystal is a solid made up of particles arranged in a regular geometric pattern.
  • In laboratories, the process of forming crystals from a saturated solution is called crystallization.
  • Crystallization is based on differences in solubility at different temperatures.
