Topics in Quadratic Equations

1

1. Basic ideas and identification

  • A polynomial of first degree is a linear polynomial.
  • A polynomial of second degree is a quadratic polynomial.
  • A quadratic equation has the general form ax²+bx+c=0 with a≠0.
2

2. Finding and verifying roots

  • A root is a value of x that satisfies the quadratic equation.
  • Direct substitution is used to verify whether a number is a root.
  • For x²-18x+72=0, x=6 is verified as a root by substitution.
3

3. Solving quadratic equations by factorisation

  • The quadratic polynomial is first written as a product of two linear factors.
  • Then the zero product rule is applied.
  • This method is useful when factorisation is possible.
4

4. Solving quadratic equations by formula

  • There are two derivation methods: General Method and Sridharacharya Method.
  • Both lead to the same quadratic formula.
  • The discriminant appears inside the square root.
