Topics in Ratio and Proportion

1

1. Ratio: Meaning, Properties, and Important Points

  • Ratio is a fraction between two quantities of the same kind or unit.
  • A ratio is written as a:b and is read as 'a is to b'.
  • The numerator a is called the antecedent and the denominator b is called the consequent.
2

2. Composition of Ratios

  • Compound ratio is formed by multiplying two or more ratios termwise.
  • The compound ratio of a:b and c:d is ac:bd.
  • Duplicate ratio is the compound ratio of two equal ratios.
3

3. Proportion and Its Main Property

  • Four quantities are in proportion if the ratio of the first to the second equals the ratio of the third to the fourth.
  • Proportion is written as a:b = c:d or a:b::c:d.
  • In a proportion, a and d are extremes, while b and c are means.
4

4. Continued Proportion, Mean Proportional, and Third Proportional

  • Quantities are in continued proportion if the ratio of the first to the second equals the ratio of the second to the third and so on.
  • For continued proportion, a/b = b/c = c/d = d/e = e/f.
  • Three or more non-zero quantities are in continued proportion if each ratio is equal to the next ratio.
