1. Inclination and Slope

  • Inclination is the angle a straight line makes with the positive direction of the X-axis, measured anticlockwise.
  • Inclination always lies between 0° and 180°.
  • A line parallel to the X-axis has inclination 0° and is a horizontal line.

2. Slope from Two Points

  • If two points lie on a line, the slope can be found from their coordinates.
  • For points P(x1, y1) and Q(x2, y2), slope is found using the change in y divided by the change in x.
  • The slope formula is one of the most important formulas in the chapter.

3. Intercepts and Special Lines

  • If a line cuts the X-axis at P and the Y-axis at Q, OP is the X-intercept and OQ is the Y-intercept.
  • The X-intercept is positive if the point lies to the right of the origin and negative if it lies to the left.
  • The Y-intercept is positive if the point lies above the origin and negative if it lies below the origin.

4. Equation Forms of a Line

  • A line can be written in different forms depending on the given information.
  • Point-slope form is used when one point on the line and its slope are known.
  • Two-point form is used when two points on the line are known.
