Cylinder and Hollow Cylinder

  • A right circular cylinder is formed when a rectangle is revolved about one of its sides.
  • The side about which the rectangle revolves is the height of the cylinder.
  • The line generating the curved surface is called the generating line.

Cone

  • A right circular cone is generated by revolving a right-angled triangle about one of the sides containing the right angle.
  • The vertex of the cone is the pointed top.
  • The radius of the circular base is denoted by r.

Sphere, Hemisphere and Shells

  • A sphere is formed when a circle is revolved about its diameter.
  • A sphere is also a solid bounded by a closed surface, all points on which are at a constant distance from a fixed point.
  • A hemisphere is exactly half of a sphere formed by a plane through the centre.

Combination of Solids and Application Problems

  • Combination solids are made from two or more basic solids.
  • A capsule is a combination of a cylinder and two hemispheres.
  • A tent is a combination of a cylinder and a cone.
