Topics in Reflection

1

1. Cartesian System and Coordinates

  • X'OX and YOY are two mutually perpendicular lines that divide the cartesian plane into four quadrants.
  • X-axis and Y-axis taken together are called co-ordinate axes.
  • The point of intersection of the axes is the origin O.
2

2. Reflection and Axis of Reflection

  • When an object is seen in a mirror, its image is obtained on the other side of the mirror, called its reflection.
  • The distance of the image from the mirror is equal to the distance of the object from the mirror.
  • The mirror line is perpendicular to the line joining the object and its image.
3

3. Reflection in a Line Parallel to X-axis

  • A line parallel to X-axis has equation y = a.
  • The value of a is positive if the line lies above the X-axis and negative if it lies below the X-axis.
  • For reflection in line y = a, the x-coordinate stays the same.
4

4. Reflection in a Line Parallel to Y-axis

  • A line parallel to Y-axis has equation x = a.
  • The value of a is positive if the line lies to the right of the Y-axis and negative if it lies to the left.
  • For reflection in line x = a, the y-coordinate stays the same.
