1. Trigonometric Ratios and Side Names

  • Trigonometric ratios are ratios of the sides of a right-angled triangle with respect to an acute angle.
  • The side opposite to the 90 degree angle is the hypotenuse.
  • The side at which the right angle and the given angle lie is the base.

2. Reciprocal and Quotient Relations

  • Sine and cosecant are reciprocals.
  • Cosine and secant are reciprocals.
  • Tangent and cotangent are reciprocals.

3. Fundamental Identities

  • There are three fundamental trigonometric identities.
  • The first identity comes from Pythagoras theorem applied to a right triangle.
  • The other two identities can be obtained from the first by dividing through by cos squared theta or sin squared theta.

4. Proving Identities Step by Step

  • Start with either the left-hand side or the right-hand side.
  • Use algebraic changes to make one side look like the other.
  • Common methods include using fundamental identities, rationalizing, making perfect squares, using algebraic formulae, and taking LCM.
