Plant Tissues and Meristematic Tissues
- A tissue is a group of similar or dissimilar cells that performs the same function and has a common origin.
- Plant tissues are classified developmentally into meristematic tissues and permanent tissues.
- Meristematic cells are thin-walled, isodiametric, compactly arranged, living, and without intercellular spaces.
Permanent Tissues: Simple and Complex Tissues
- Permanent tissues are formed from meristematic tissues after cells lose the power of division.
- Permanent tissues may be living or dead, thin-walled or thick-walled.
- Simple permanent tissues have only one type of cells.
Tissue Systems and Epidermal System
- Plant tissue systems are grouped by topography into epidermal or dermal, fundamental or ground, and vascular or conducting systems.
- The epidermal tissue system forms the outer protective covering of the plant.
- During secondary growth, epidermis may be replaced by periderm.
Ground Tissue System, Root Anatomy and Stem Anatomy
- The fundamental or ground tissue system forms the main bulk of the plant body and extends from below the epidermis to the centre excluding vascular bundles.
- In roots and dicot stems, ground tissue outside the vascular cylinder is extrastelar, while the tissue inside is intrastelar.
- Ground tissue regions include cortex, pericycle, pith and medullary rays.
