Topics in Anatomy of Flowering Plants

1

Plant Tissues and Meristematic Tissues

  • A tissue is a group of similar or dissimilar cells that performs the same function and has a common origin.
  • Plant tissues are classified developmentally into meristematic tissues and permanent tissues.
  • Meristematic cells are thin-walled, isodiametric, compactly arranged, living, and without intercellular spaces.
2

Permanent Tissues: Simple and Complex Tissues

  • Permanent tissues are formed from meristematic tissues after cells lose the power of division.
  • Permanent tissues may be living or dead, thin-walled or thick-walled.
  • Simple permanent tissues have only one type of cells.
3

Tissue Systems and Epidermal System

  • Plant tissue systems are grouped by topography into epidermal or dermal, fundamental or ground, and vascular or conducting systems.
  • The epidermal tissue system forms the outer protective covering of the plant.
  • During secondary growth, epidermis may be replaced by periderm.
4

Ground Tissue System, Root Anatomy and Stem Anatomy

  • The fundamental or ground tissue system forms the main bulk of the plant body and extends from below the epidermis to the centre excluding vascular bundles.
  • In roots and dicot stems, ground tissue outside the vascular cylinder is extrastelar, while the tissue inside is intrastelar.
  • Ground tissue regions include cortex, pericycle, pith and medullary rays.
