  • Aldehydes can also be oxidised by mild oxidising agents like Tollens' reagent.
  • Nitriles on hydrolysis with acid or alkali give carboxylic acids.

4. Physical Properties of Carboxylic Acids

  • Lower carboxylic acids up to C4 are highly soluble in water.
  • Acids with seven or more carbon atoms are practically insoluble in water.
  • C4 to C9 acids are oily liquids with a goat-like odour.
