Indian Geological Units and the Peninsular Plateau

  • India is made up of three geological units: the Peninsular plateaus, the Himalayan mountains, and the Indo-Gangetic plains.
  • The Peninsular Plateau is also called the Southern Plateau.
  • It is surrounded by sea on three sides.

The Himalayas and Plate Tectonic Theory

  • The Himalayan mountain ranges are much younger than the Peninsular Plateau and are called the Young Fold Mountains.
  • Until the Mesozoic era, the Himalayan and plain areas remained under sea water as part of the Tethys geosyncline.
  • The Tethys Sea lay between Angaraland in the north and Gondwanaland in the south.

The Great Plain and Ongoing Landform Development

  • The Great Plain lies between the Himalayas in the north and the Peninsular Plateau in the south.
  • It formed in a depression caused by Himalayan uplift and subsidence of the northern flank of the peninsula.
  • Rivers from the north and south deposited sediment in this depression.
