Plane Table Survey: Meaning and Features

  • Plane table survey is based on the plane table instrument.
  • Its greatest advantage is that field work and plotting are done simultaneously in the field itself.

Instruments Used in Plane Table Survey

  • The main instruments are plane table with tripod stand, alidade, spirit level, plumbing fork and plumb bob, trough compass, chain, measuring tape, arrows, ranging rods, and drawing material.
  • The plane table is a drawing board of well seasoned pinewood fitted on a 1.5 metre long tripod stand.
  • The tripod stand helps in levelling the plane table.

  • Engineer’s chain is used to measure distances in feet.
