- Surveying includes both linear and angular measurements.

Plane Table Survey: Meaning and Features
- Plane table survey is based on the plane table instrument.
- Its greatest advantage is that field work and plotting are done simultaneously in the field itself.
- No field book is required in this method.
Instruments Used in Plane Table Survey
- The main instruments are plane table with tripod stand, alidade, spirit level, plumbing fork and plumb bob, trough compass, chain, measuring tape, arrows, ranging rods, and drawing material.
- The plane table is a drawing board of well seasoned pinewood fitted on a 1.5 metre long tripod stand.
- The tripod stand helps in levelling the plane table.
Kinds of Chains, Tapes, Arrows, and Ranging Rods
- Engineer’s chain is 100 ft long and has 100 links, so each link is 1 foot long.
- Engineer’s chain is used to measure distances in feet.
- Gunter’s chain is 66 ft or 22 yards long and has 100 links, so each link is 0.66 ft or 7.92 inches long.
