What to Focus On

  • The Indian number system uses commas after every 2 digits from the right after the first 3 digits.
  • 1 lakh = 1,00,000
  • 10 lakhs = 10,00,000 = 1 crore

  • Each digit has a place value based on its position.
  • The same digit can have different values in different positions.
  • Always identify the place (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.) before calculating place value.

  • Expanded form helps understand the contribution of each digit.
  • Compact form is the standard way of writing numbers.
  • Always add carefully when converting from expanded to compact form.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The number 10,00,000 is called 'one million' so we don't need to learn 'ten lakh'.

The place value of a digit is the same as its face value.

When writing number names, we say 'and' after every comma.

Memory Tips

Place Value Order: Ones, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, Ten Thousands, Lakhs, Ten Lakhs

10 ones = 1 ten, 10 tens = 1 hundred, ..., 10 lakhs = 1 ten lakh

Expanded form of 62,25,728 = 60,00,000 + 2,00,000 + 20,000 + 5,000 + 700 + 20 + 8
