Understanding Large Numbers

  • The Indian number system uses commas after every two digits from the right, starting after hundreds.
  • Place values: Ones, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, Ten Thousands, Lakhs, Ten Lakhs.
  • 10 lakhs = 10,00,000, which is the smallest 7-digit number.

Place Value and Face Value

  • Place value depends on the position of a digit in a number.
  • Face value is simply the digit itself.
  • Example: In 37,48,291, the digit 7 has face value 7 but place value 7,00,000 (7 lakhs).

Expanded and Compact Form

  • Expanded form breaks a number into the sum of the values of each digit.
  • Compact form is the standard way of writing a number using digits.
  • Used to understand the contribution of each digit in a number.
