Understanding Integers

  • Whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3...) and their negative counterparts (-1, -2, -3...) together form integers.
  • Integers include positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero.
  • Zero is neither positive nor negative.

Number Line and Ordering of Integers

  • A number line helps us visualize integers. Zero is in the middle, positive numbers go to the right, and negative numbers to the left.
  • On a number line, numbers increase as we move to the right and decrease as we move to the left.
  • Any positive number is greater than any negative number.

Addition and Subtraction of Integers

  • When adding two integers with the same sign, add their values and keep the common sign.
  • When adding integers with different signs, subtract the smaller value from the larger one and keep the sign of the larger number.
  • Subtracting an integer is the same as adding its opposite.

Real-Life Applications

  • Negative numbers are used to show loss, debt, cold temperatures, and depths below sea level.
  • Profit is positive, loss is negative.
  • Temperatures above 0°C are positive, below 0°C are negative.
