Understanding Large Numbers

  • The Indian Number System uses commas (or spaces) to separate numbers into periods: Ones, Thousands, Lakhs, and Crores.

  • 1 crore is the smallest 8-digit number.

Place Value and Expanded Form

  • Each digit in a number has a place value based on its position.
  • The place value chart includes: Ones, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, Ten Thousands, Lakhs, Ten Lakhs, Crores, Ten Crores.
  • To find the place value, multiply the digit by the value of its position.

Successor and Predecessor

  • Successor of a number is the number that comes just after it (add 1).
  • Predecessor of a number is the number that comes just before it (subtract 1).
  • For large numbers, adding or subtracting 1 may change multiple digits (e.g., 9,99,99,999 + 1 = 10,00,00,000).

Comparing and Ordering Numbers

  • Rule 1: A number with more digits is greater.
  • Rule 2: If numbers have the same digits, compare from left to right.
  • Ascending order: Smallest to largest.
