What to Focus On

  • Constant = fixed value
  • Variable = letter that can take different values
  • Term may be a number, a variable, or their product/quotient
  • Translate words into symbols carefully
  • A two-digit number = 10 × ten’s digit + unit digit
  • Brackets keep grouped parts together
  • Polynomial exponents must be whole numbers
  • Fractional exponents do not allow a polynomial
  • Variable exponents do not allow a polynomial

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Product and division always create separate terms, so 3x × 4y has two terms and 3x ÷ 4y has two terms.

Any fraction with a variable, such as 4/x, is automatically a monomial.

A polynomial can have any exponent, including a variable exponent, a negative exponent, or a fractional exponent.
