What to Focus On

  • Ratio compares two quantities of the same kind and same unit.
  • The symbol of ratio is :
  • The first term is called antecedent and the second term is called consequent.

  • Fractional ratios can be changed into whole number ratios.
  • Multiply each term by the L.C.M. of the denominators.
  • The ratio remains unchanged if both terms are multiplied by the same non-zero number.

  • Add all terms of the ratio to get the total number of equal parts.
  • Each share is found as its term divided by the sum of all terms.
  • First convert fractional ratios into whole numbers if needed.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A ratio can be formed between any two numbers, even if the quantities are of different kinds or units.

A ratio always has a unit because the quantities being compared have units.

The order of terms in a ratio does not matter, so 3 : 4 and 4 : 3 mean the same thing.

Memory Tips

Ratio symbol and fraction form
