What to Focus On

  • A fraction shows equal parts of a whole.
  • In a/b, a is the numerator and b is the denominator.
  • The denominator cannot be zero.
  • All fractions are rational numbers.
  • All rational numbers are not fractions.
  • Positive rational numbers are fractions.
  • Decimal fractions have denominators 10, 100, 1000, and so on.
  • Vulgar fractions have denominators other than powers of 10.
  • Proper fractions have numerator smaller than denominator.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Any number written as a/b is a fraction.

A fraction does not need to be in lowest terms.

A fraction stays the same only when both terms are multiplied, not when both are divided.
