What to Focus On
- Decimal fractions have denominators like 10, 100, 1000, and higher powers of 10.
- The decimal point replaces the written denominator.
- 3/5 and 7/8 are decimal fractions because they can be written with denominators that are powers of 10.
- A leading zero is written when there is no digit to the left of the decimal point.
- A decimal number has an integral part and a decimal part.
- Trailing zeroes do not change the value of a decimal number.
- Read the integral part by value and the decimal part digit by digit.
- The first place to the right of the decimal point is the tenths' place.
- The second place to the right is the hundredths' place.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
A decimal number must always have a digit to the left of the decimal point, so 0.72 and 0.004 are wrong forms.
Trailing zeroes after the decimal point change the value of the number.
Like decimals are decimals with equal values, not decimals with the same number of decimal places.
