Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Basic Ideas and Common Factors

  • A factor is each number or expression that forms a product.
  • Factorisation means rewriting an expression as a product of simpler expressions.
  • The largest monomial dividing each term should be taken out first.
2

2. Factorisation by Grouping

  • Grouping is used when an expression has an even number of terms.
  • Terms are arranged into groups so that each group has a common factor.
  • After factorising each group, the common binomial or expression is taken out.
3

3. Difference of Two Squares

  • A difference of two squares has the form x^2 - y^2.
  • Its factors are (x + y)(x - y).
  • The rule can be remembered as the sum of the two terms multiplied by their difference.
4

4. Factorising Trinomials

  • A trinomial has three terms.
  • To factorise a trinomial, split the middle term into two terms.
  • The two new terms must have a sum equal to the middle term and a product equal to the product of the first and last terms.
