1. Curves, Open Curves, and Closed Curves

  • All these figures are called curves.
  • In mathematics, a straight line is also called a curve.
  • A curve which does not cut itself is called an open curve.

2. Polygons and Their Parts

  • A polygon is a closed plane figure bounded by straight-line segments.
  • The line segments forming a polygon intersect only at end-points, and each end-point is shared by only two line segments.
  • The segments of a polygon are called its sides.

3. Types of Polygons

  • If each angle of a polygon is less than 180°, it is called a convex polygon.
  • If at least one internal angle of a polygon is more than 180°, it is called a concave or re-entrant polygon.
  • Unless it is stated, a polygon means a convex polygon.

4. Sum of Interior Angles of a Polygon

  • The number of triangles formed is two less than the number of sides in the polygon.
  • Sum of interior angles of a polygon with n sides = (n - 2) × 180°.
  • The same formula can also be written as (2n - 4) × 90°.
