Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Basic Ideas and Definitions

  • An equation is a statement which says that one thing is equal to another.
  • An inequation is a statement which says that one thing is not equal to another, either greater or lesser.
  • Connecting verbs are the symbols =, ≠, <, >, ≤, and ≥.
2

2. Replacement Set and Solution Set

  • The replacement set, also called the universal set, is the set from which the value of x is chosen.
  • The solution set, also called the truth set, is the set of values from the replacement set that satisfy the inequation.
  • The same inequation can have different solution sets for different replacement sets.
3

3. Properties of Inequations

  • Adding the same number to each side of an inequation does not change the sign of inequality.
  • Subtracting the same number from each side of an inequation does not change the sign of inequality.
  • Multiplying each side of an inequation by a positive number does not change the sign of inequality.
4

4. Number Line Representation

  • A number line is a graph, a straight line, on which real numbers are marked.
  • The solution of every inequation can be represented on a number line.
  • Thick dots on the number line represent the solution for discrete solution sets.
