Mixed farming

Mixed farming involves both crop cultivation and animal husbandry activities together on the same farm. This system includes raising crops along with cattle-rearing, poultry, beekeeping, pig-rearing, and aquaculture. It provides multiple sources of income and reduces risk for farmers. Animal waste serves as organic manure for crops, creating a sustainable farming cycle. This method optimally utilizes farm resources and provides year-round employment. Mixed farming is practiced widely in regions where both crop and livestock activities are feasible.

Fallow land

Fallow land refers to agricultural land that is left uncultivated for a period. This practice allows soil to regain its fertility naturally through rest. However, with increasing population and demand for food, fallow land is being reduced. Modern technology and fertilizers are helping to utilize even fallow land for cultivation. The fallow system was traditionally used to maintain soil health. Today, crop rotation and scientific methods are replacing the need for keeping land fallow for extended periods.

Jute

Jute is known as the 'Golden Fiber' due to its golden color and economic importance. It is an important fiber crop grown mainly in West Bengal and Bangladesh. Jute requires high temperature, heavy rainfall, and humid climate for growth. The fiber is used to make gunny bags, carpets, and other products. India is a major producer and exporter of jute products. The golden appearance of jute fiber when processed gives it this special name. Jute cultivation provides employment to millions of people in rural areas.

February-March

Rabi crops are harvested during February-March months. These crops are sown in October-November after the monsoon season ends. The cool winter months provide ideal growing conditions for rabi crops like wheat, barley, and mustard. The crops benefit from winter rainfall and mild temperatures. Harvesting occurs before the onset of hot summer weather. States like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are major rabi crop producing regions. The timing ensures crops mature in favorable weather conditions before summer heat.
