1. Types of Solutions and Concentration Units
- The component present in largest quantity is the solvent and determines the physical state of the solution.
- Binary solutions contain two components only.
- Types of solutions depend on the physical state of solute and solvent: gas in gas, gas in liquid, solid in liquid, gas in solid, liquid in solid, and so on.
2. Solubility and Henry's Law
- Solubility is the maximum amount of a substance that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specified temperature.
- Solubility of a gas in a liquid increases with increase of pressure.
- Solubility of gases in liquids decreases with rise in temperature.
3. Vapour Pressure of Liquid Solutions and Raoult's Law
- In a binary solution of two volatile liquids, both components contribute to vapour pressure.
- Raoult's law states that the partial vapour pressure of each volatile component is directly proportional to its mole fraction in solution.
- For a liquid solution, total pressure is the sum of partial pressures by Dalton's law.
4. Ideal Solutions, Non-Ideal Solutions, and Azeotropes
- Ideal solutions obey Raoult's law over the entire range of concentration.
- Ideal solutions have zero enthalpy of mixing and zero volume of mixing.
- Ideal behaviour arises when A-A, B-B, and A-B intermolecular forces are nearly equal.
