समासः — मूलस्वरूपम्

  • समासशब्दः संक्षेपणार्थकः।
  • द्वयोः बहूनां वा पदानां विभक्तयः लुप्यन्ते, ‘च’ इत्यादीनि समुच्चयपदानि अपि लुप्यन्ते, एकं पदं निर्मीयते।
  • किञ्चित् स्थले विभक्तिलोपः न भवति; तादृशाः अलुकसमासाः इति कथ्यन्ते।

समासस्य मुख्यभेदाः

  • पदप्रधानतया समासस्य मुख्यतः चत्वारः भेदाः सन्ति — अव्ययीभावः, तत्पुरुषः, द्वन्द्वः, बहुव्रीहिः।
  • तत्पुरुषस्य कर्मधारयः द्विगुः च उपभेदौ स्तः; अतः सामान्यतः षड् भेदाः।
  • अव्ययीभावे प्रथमपदं अव्ययम् अपि प्रधानं च भवति।

अव्ययीभावः

  • अव्ययीभावसमासे प्रथमपदं अव्ययं भवति।
  • अस्मिन् समासे प्रथमपदमेव प्रधानम्।
  • समस्तपदं अव्ययरूपेण प्रयुज्यते तथा नपुंसकलिङ्गे दृश्यते।

तत्पुरुषः तथा तस्य भेदाः

  • तत्पुरुषसमासे प्रायेण उत्तरपदप्रधानता भवति।
  • अस्मिन् समासे द्वितीयादिसप्तमीपर्यन्तानां विभक्तीनां लोपः भवति।
  • तत्पुरुषस्य उपभेदौ कर्मधारयः द्विगुः च स्तः।
