  • अव्यय वे शब्दाः सन्ति ये सर्वदा एकरूपाः एव तिष्ठन्ति।
  • एतेषु विभक्ति, वचन, लिङ्ग इत्यादीनां कारणेन रूपान्तरं न भवति।
  • अव्ययस्य श्लोकः स्मरणीयः — सदृशं त्रिषु लिङ्गेषु, सर्वासु च विभक्तिषु । वचनेषु च सर्वेषु यन्न व्येति तदव्ययम् ॥

  • अव्यय-पदों के अनेक सामान्य प्रयोग मिलते हैं।
  • अथवा का अर्थ या है।

  • कच्छपः शनैः शनैः चलति। — शनैः शनैः का अर्थ धीरे-धीरे है।
  • अचिरं गृहं गच्छ। — अचिरम् का अर्थ शीघ्र ही है।
  • अहं श्वः वाराणसीं गमिष्यामि। — श्वः का अर्थ आने वाला कल है।
