Rice - The Staple Kharif Crop
- Rice supports half of India's population and is the staple food of northeast and southern India
- It is both tropical and subtropical crop with about 4,000 varieties grown in India out of 10,000 world varieties
- Three types: Wet/lowland rice (well-watered plains), Terraced cultivation (hill slopes), Dry/upland rice (hilly regions)
Wheat - The Temperate Rabi Crop
- Wheat is the staple food of north and northwest India, rich in proteins, vitamins, and carbohydrates
- India is 4th largest producer globally (8.7% of world production) after Russia, USA, and China
- Two varieties: Normal bread variety (irrigated friable loam) and Macaroni wheat (black soil, high rainfall)
Pulses - The Protein-Rich Legumes
- Pulses provide vegetable proteins to large vegetarian population of India
- Main pulses: Gram (37% of pulse production), Arhar, Urad, Moong, Masur
- Leguminous plants with root nodules that fix atmospheric nitrogen, improving soil fertility
Maize - The Versatile Fodder Crop
- Maize is used both as food and fodder, also called corn
- Tropical crop grown mainly in kharif season, rabi in Tamil Nadu
- Can be grown from plains to 2500m altitude, well-drained plains preferred
