1. Root System

  • The root is a non-green, cylindrical, descending axis that normally grows downwards into the soil.
  • The root develops from the radicle.

  • Tap roots may be modified for storage of food.
  • Fusiform root is spindle-shaped, swollen in the middle and tapering at both ends; example: radish.
  • Napiform root is swollen in the upper region and tapers suddenly below; examples: turnip and beet root.

  • The stem is the ascending portion of the plant and the direct prolongation of the plumule.
  • The stem is positively phototropic and negatively geotropic.
  • The stem is differentiated into nodes and internodes.

  • The leaf is a flattened, lateral outgrowth of the stem or branch, developing from a node and having a bud in its axil.
  • Leaves are exogenous in origin and have limited growth.
  • Leaves are the food manufacturing organs of the plant.
