Key Topics to Revise
1. Moisture in the Atmosphere and the Hydrologic Cycle
- Moisture comes into the atmosphere mainly through evaporation from water bodies.
- Moisture is present in all three forms: gaseous water vapour, liquid droplets, and solid ice crystals.
- It forms only 0 to 4% of the atmosphere, yet it is the most important constituent for weather and climate.
2. Evaporation
- Evaporation is the process by which water changes from liquid to vapour or gas.
- Evaporation supplies water vapour to the atmosphere.
- About 600 calories of energy are required to convert 1 gram of water into water vapour without a change in temperature; this is called latent heat.
3. Humidity and Its Types
- Humidity means the amount of water vapour present in the air.
- Humidity is measured in grams per cubic metre.
- At a given temperature, air can hold only a fixed amount of water vapour; this limit is called saturation point and the air is then called saturated air.
4. Condensation, Dew Point, Dew, Frost, Fog, and Mist
- Condensation is the change of state from gaseous to liquid or solid.
- Dew point is the temperature at which saturation occurs or water vapour begins to change into water.
- Condensation in free air happens around condensation nuclei such as dust, smoke, and salt particles.
