Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Main Movements of Ocean Water

  • Ocean water moves in three ways: waves, currents, and tides.
  • Waves are oscillatory movements in water and only the wave travels forward; water particles mainly move up and down and to and fro.
  • Currents are regular movements of a mass of water in a fairly definite direction over great distances.
2

2. Ocean Waves

  • Waves are caused mainly by the friction and pressure of winds on the sea surface.
  • The size and force of waves depend on wind velocity, duration of wind, and fetch.
  • A fetch is the distance over which wind blows unhindered.
3

3. Ocean Currents

  • Ocean currents are regular movements of water in a fairly definite direction over great distances.
  • Water in a current moves forward, unlike water in waves.
  • Currents are deep and permanent.
4

4. Important Ocean Currents and Their Effects

  • Kuro Shio is a warm current formed when the North Equatorial Current turns north along the coasts of Taiwan and Japan after reaching the Philippine Islands.
  • Oya Shio is a cold current starting from the Bering Strait and flowing south along the east coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula.
  • The Oya Shio finally merges with and sinks beneath the warmer Kuro Shio water.
