Atmospheric Pressure: Meaning, Measurement, and Importance
- Atmospheric pressure is the pressure exerted by the atmosphere on the earth’s surface.
- Air has weight, so it presses on the surface below it.
- Atmospheric pressure is measured with a barometer.
Factors Affecting Atmospheric Pressure
- Temperature and pressure are inversely related: when temperature rises, air expands, becomes lighter, and pressure falls.
- When temperature falls, air contracts, becomes denser, and pressure rises.
- Altitude reduces pressure because air is compressed more in lower layers than in upper layers.
Global Pressure Belts and Their Seasonal Shift
- There are seven pressure belts over the globe.
- Equatorial low pressure belt extends up to 10°N and S of the equator.
- Sub-tropical high pressure belts extend from near the tropics to about 35°N and S.
Winds and Their Controlling Factors
- Wind is the horizontal movement of air.
- Air current is the vertical or nearly vertical movement of air.
- Wind moves from high pressure to low pressure.
