1. Meaning of Decimal Fractions

  • A decimal fraction is a fraction whose denominator can be expressed as 10 or some higher power of 10.
  • A decimal point is used to show the absence of the written denominator.
  • If there is no number to the left of the decimal point, a zero is generally written.

2. Place Value and Decimal Places

  • The first place to the right of the decimal point is the tenths' place.
  • The second place to the right of the decimal point is the hundredths' place.
  • The number of figures following the decimal point is called the number of decimal places.
3

3. Converting Between Fractions and Decimals

  • To convert a decimal to a fraction, remove the decimal point and write as many zeroes in the denominator as digits in the decimal part, then simplify.
  • To convert a fraction with denominator 10, 100, 1000, and so on into a decimal, place the decimal point after as many digits of the numerator from the right as there are zeroes in the denominator.
  • If the denominator is not 10, 100, 1000, and so on, divide normally and place the decimal point in the quotient after the unit digit division is completed.
4

4. Addition and Subtraction of Decimals

  • In addition and subtraction, decimal points must be written in the same vertical line.
  • Digits with the same place value must be arranged one below the other.
  • Empty places may be filled with zeroes.
