Key Topics to Revise

1

Core Ideas and Definitions

  • A factor is one of the expressions whose product gives the original polynomial.
  • Factorisation is the process of writing an expression in the form of terms or brackets multiplied together.
  • Factorisation is the reverse of multiplication.
2

Method 1: Common Factor Method

  • Use this when every term has a common factor.
  • Find the H.C.F. of all terms.
  • Divide each term by the common factor and keep the factor outside the bracket.
3

Method 2: Grouping Method

  • Use this when an expression has an even number of terms.
  • Arrange terms into groups so that each group has a common factor.
  • Factor out the common factor from each group.
4

Method 3: Trinomial Splitting the Middle Term

  • This method is used for expressions of the form ax^2 + bx + c.
  • Split the middle term b into two parts.
  • The two parts must add to b and multiply to a × c.
