1. Data, Statistics, and Variable

  • A set of collected numerical facts is called a set of data.
  • Statistics is used in two different senses: singular and plural.
  • As a singular term, Statistics means the whole subject dealing with collecting, analysing, and interpreting data.
2

2. Tabulation, Frequency, and Frequency Distribution

  • Tabulation means arranging data in a table.
  • A frequency tells how many times a particular data value appears in a set of data.
  • Frequency distribution is a tabular arrangement of data showing corresponding frequencies.
3

3. Grouped Frequency Distribution and Class Intervals

  • Grouped frequency distribution uses class intervals instead of single values.
  • There are two types of frequency distributions in general: inclusive and exclusive.

  • Class-size is the difference between the actual lower limit and actual upper limit of a class interval.
  • Class-mark is the value midway between the actual lower limit and actual upper limit.
