Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Basic Ideas: Co-ordinates, Ordered Pairs, and Axes

  • A pair of two numbers is used to show the position of a point.
  • An ordered pair has a fixed order: (5,7) and (7,5) are different.
  • The first component is the abscissa and the second component is the ordinate.
2

2. Quadrants and Sign Convention

  • The axes divide the plane into four quadrants.
  • Quadrants are named from OX in the anti-clockwise direction.
  • First quadrant: both abscissa and ordinate are positive.
3

3. Points on the Axes

  • A point on the x-axis has ordinate zero, so its form is (x, 0).
  • A point on the y-axis has abscissa zero, so its form is (0, y).
  • The origin is the only point common to both axes.
4

4. Linear Equations, Dependence, and Graphs

  • If the graph of an equation is a straight line, the equation is called a linear equation.
  • In an equation written with y as the subject, y is the dependent variable and x is the independent variable.
  • In an equation written with x as the subject, x is the dependent variable and y is the independent variable.
