For distant vision:

f=1P=15.5m=0.1818m=18.2cmf=\frac{1}{P}=\frac{1}{-5.5}\,m=-0.1818\,m=-18.2\,cm

For near vision:
P=+1.5DP=+1.5\,D

f=11.5m=0.6667m=66.7cmf=\frac{1}{1.5}\,m=0.6667\,m=66.7\,cm

So the focal lengths are -18.2 cm and +66.7 cm.

6The far point of a myopic person is 80 cm in front of the eye. What is the nature and power of the lens required to correct the problem?Show solution
A myopic eye forms the image of distant objects in front of the retina. It is corrected by a concave lens.

Given far point = 80cm=0.8m80\,cm = 0.8\,m.
For correction, the lens should form the image of a distant object at the far point, so
f=0.8mf = -0.8\,m (negative for concave lens).

Power,
P=1f=10.8=1.25DP=\frac{1}{f}=\frac{1}{-0.8}=-1.25\,D

So the required lens is a concave lens of power -1.25 dioptre.
