3. Consumer Redressal System and Consumer Protection Laws

  • The consumer redressal system includes laws to protect consumers and institutions to enforce those laws.
  • Consumer Protection Act 1986 is the most important legislation for protecting consumer interest in India.
  • The CPA was enacted to provide cheap, simple, and quick justice.

4. Consumer Councils and Consumer Courts

  • There are two types of institutions dealing with consumer grievances: Government Councils and Consumer Courts.
  • The Central Consumer Protection Council is at the national level and is headed by a Central Minister in-charge of Consumer Affairs in New Delhi.
  • The State Consumer Protection Council is at the state level and is headed by a State Minister in-charge of Consumer Affairs.
