  • A market exists when there is interaction between buyers and sellers.
  • A market requires a commodity, buyers and sellers, and communication between them.
  • Buyers and sellers may interact directly or indirectly through agents, telephone, mobile, or internet.

  • Market structure means the nature of the product and the number of sellers and buyers.
  • Two extreme forms of market are monopoly market and perfectly competitive market.
  • Real markets often do not fit these extreme forms exactly.

3. Monopoly Market

  • The word Monopoly is derived from Greek words 'Monos' meaning single and 'Polus' meaning seller.
  • Under monopoly there is a single seller and no close substitute.
  • There is no difference between firm and industry under monopoly because there is only one seller.

4. Perfect Competition

  • Perfect competition is the opposite extreme of monopoly.
  • There are large numbers of sellers and buyers.
  • The product is homogeneous, meaning the same type of product is sold by all sellers.
