1. Meaning of Cost

  • A producer must spend money to hire or buy land, labour, capital, and raw materials before production starts.
  • Cost is the money expenditure incurred by the producer to purchase or hire factors of production and raw materials to produce goods and services.
  • In the rice example, the farmer hires 5 acres of land and pays Rs. 5,000 rent to the landlord.

2. Types of Cost

  • The main types of cost are fixed cost, variable cost, explicit cost, and implicit cost.
  • Fixed cost does not change with output and must be paid even if production is zero.
  • In the farmer example, rent paid to the landlord is a fixed cost.

3. Average Cost and Marginal Cost

  • Average Cost is the cost per unit of output.
  • Marginal Cost is the increase in total cost due to an increase in one extra unit of output.
  • Average cost is calculated for every given level of output.

4. Revenue, Average Revenue, and Marginal Revenue

  • Revenue is the amount received by selling a certain quantity of a commodity.
  • Total Revenue is also called total sales proceeds.
  • For a single commodity, Average Revenue and price are the same.
