1. Meaning of Production and Production Function

  • Production is the transformation of inputs into output.
  • The four factors of production are land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship.
  • Inputs are the resources used in production; output is the good or service produced.

2. Techniques of Production and Division of Labour

  • Goods and services can be produced in more than one way.
  • Labour intensive technology uses more labour and less capital per unit of output.
  • Capital intensive technology uses more capital and less labour per unit of output.

3. Total Product, Average Product and Marginal Product

  • Total Product, Average Product and Marginal Product are three important concepts of production.
  • TP refers to the total quantity of output at a particular level of employment of labour when other inputs remain unchanged.
  • AP is output per unit of labour.

4. Law of Diminishing Marginal Product of Labour

  • As labour increases continuously, MP first rises, then falls, and may become negative.
  • This is called the Law of Diminishing Marginal Product of labour.
  • The law works when other factors remain unchanged.
