1. Acids and Bases: Basic Ideas
- The term acid comes from the Latin word meaning sour.
- Robert Boyle first used the terms acid and base in the seventeenth century based on properties such as taste, corrosive nature, litmus change, and mutual neutralisation.
- An acid is a substance which furnishes hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water.

- Indicators are substances that show one colour in acidic medium and another colour in basic medium.
- Litmus is a natural dye from lichens and the earliest indicator.

- Acids are corrosive to metals.

- Bases taste bitter and feel soapy to touch.
- Aqueous solutions of bases conduct electricity because they produce ions.
- Bases furnish OH- ions in water.
