1. Stem Cells: Core Idea and Classification

  • Stem cells are non-specialised, immature cells that can self-renew by mitotic cell division and differentiate into a wide range of specialised cell types.
  • The first stem cells were isolated from blood cells.
  • In humans, stem cells are found in the umbilical cord, placenta, inner cell mass of the early embryo, few tissues of the foetus, and in some adult organs.
2

2. Stem Cells Based on Source

  • Embryonic stem cells are also called early stem cells.
  • Embryonic stem cells are present in the inner cell mass of the blastocyst after around five days of development.
  • Embryonic stem cells are self-reproducing pluripotent cells and are possibly immortal.
3

3. Stem Cells Based on Potency

  • Totipotent stem cells are the most versatile stem cells.
  • Totipotent cells can produce the embryo, extra-embryonic membranes, and all post-embryonic tissues and organs that form a complete organism.
  • The zygote is a totipotent cell.
4

4. Adult Stem Cell Types and Plasticity

  • Hematopoietic stem cells are found in bone marrow and also in fetal blood and fetal bone marrow.
  • Hematopoiesis is the formation of different blood cells in bone marrow.
  • HSCs give rise to RBCs, monocytes, neutrophils, acidophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and platelets.
