1. Our Water Resources

- The south-west monsoon is responsible for 90% of India's rainfall.
3. Favourable Factors for Development of Irrigation
- The soils of the Indo-Gangetic plains are soft and gently sloping, which makes digging canals and wells easier.
- The deep clay in the subsoil acts as a reservoir for storing rainwater.
- The perennial snow-fed rivers of the plains are regular sources of irrigation.
4. Means of Irrigation
- The main means of irrigation are canals, tanks, wells, tube wells and modern methods such as sprinkler irrigation and drip irrigation.
- Canal irrigation covers about 40% of the total irrigated area in India.
- Tank irrigation covers about 12% of the total irrigated area in India.
