1. Reproductive Health: Meaning and Need
- Reproductive health refers to complete well-being in reproduction, not just the absence of disease.
- A reproductively healthy society has physically and functionally normal reproductive organs and normal emotional and behavioural interactions in sex-related matters.
- Counselling and awareness about adolescence, reproductive organs, safe sex, and sexually transmitted infections are the first steps toward reproductive health.
2. Population Explosion and Birth Control
- World population increased from about 2 billion in 1900 to about 6 billion in 2000 and 7.2 billion in 2011.
- India’s population in the 2011 census was 1210.7 million and was expected to reach 1369 million by 2020.
- The statutory marriageable age is 18 years for females and 21 years for males.
3. Natural Methods of Contraception
- Natural methods work by avoiding the meeting of ovum and sperm.
- Periodic abstinence requires avoiding coitus from day 10 to 17 of the menstrual cycle.
- Calendar, temperature, mucus, and periodic abstinence are used to estimate the safe period.
4. Artificial Methods of Contraception
- Artificial contraceptive methods include barriers, spermicidal agents, IUDs, oral pills, implants, and surgical methods.
- Barrier methods stop sperms from entering the female reproductive tract.
- Male condoms are latex sheaths and should not be reused.
