Basic Geometrical Ideas

  • A point shows position only. It has no length, no breadth, and no thickness.
  • A line has length but no breadth or thickness. It extends infinitely in both directions.
  • A ray starts from a fixed point and extends infinitely in one direction.

Angles and Their Parts

  • An angle is formed when two line segments or two rays have a common end-point.
  • The common end-point is called the vertex.
  • The two line segments or rays are called the arms of the angle.

Types of Angles

  • An acute angle measures less than 90°.
  • A right angle measures 90°.
  • An obtuse angle measures between 90° and 180°.

Angles About a Point and Related Angle Pairs

  • The sum of all angles formed about a point is always 360°.
  • Adjacent angles have a common vertex, a common arm, and the other arms lie on opposite sides of the common arm.
