1. Basic idea of fractions

  • A fraction shows part of a whole.
  • A fraction is written in the form a/b.
  • In a fraction a/b, a is the numerator and b is the denominator.

2. Fraction and rational number

  • A fraction has whole numbers in numerator and denominator, with denominator not equal to 0.
  • A rational number has integers in numerator and denominator, with denominator not equal to 0.
  • All fractions are rational numbers, but all rational numbers are not fractions.

3. Types of fractions

  • Decimal fraction: denominator is 10 or a higher power of 10.
  • Vulgar fraction: denominator is other than 10, 100, 1000, etc.
  • Proper fraction: denominator is greater than numerator.

  • A fraction must always be expressed in its lowest term.
  • To reduce a fraction to lowest terms, divide numerator and denominator by their HCF.
  • The value of a fraction does not change if both numerator and denominator are multiplied or divided by the same non-zero number.
